Soil Conservation Act

On April 27, 1935 the Soil Conservation Act was passed. Once the act was passed the Soil Erosion Service was formed out of the US Department of the Interior. The main point of the act was to pay farmers to get rid of their livestock and crop. The reason this was so controversial was during the 1930’s, the Midwest region of the United States was going through a terrible drought. Therefore, the farmers couldn’t afford to just kill their livestock and crops. The government did make the landlords give some of the money received from the act to give to those who worked the land.
