Chapter 2:  Some analysts believe that the world’s remaining hunter-gatherer societies should be given title to the land on which they and their ancestors have lived for centuries and should be left alone by civilization.  They content that we have created protective reserves for endangered species, so why not create protective reserves for cultures?  What do you think?  Explain.

Hunter Gatherer societies are nomadic, so everywhere is where their ancestors hunted and lived. Thats why they're "hunter-gatherer", because they arent in one place for a very long time. If they were, they'd be agrarian societies.  That would be like giving someone the land that they've ever done anything on. That's what i think, anyways.

Chapter 4:  Why could the total amount of animal flesh on the earth never exceed the total amount of plant flesh, even if all animals are vegetarians?

The plant flesh will always always exceed the animal flesh as far as quantity on this earth because the animals depend on plants to produce oxygen and food. so there always has to be enough plants to provide for all the animals. when the animal level gets above the plant level, the animals die off until the balance is restored.

Chapter 6:  Some biologists have suggested restoring large herds of bison on public lands in the North American plains as a way of restoring remaining tracts of tall-grass plains.  Ranchers with permits to graze cattle and sheep on federally managed lands have strongly opposed this idea.  What do you think about the idea of restoring large numbers of bison to the plains of North America?  Explain.

I dont think that there are enough bison left to put "large herds" back into the plains. Im not sure if they're endangered yet or not, but they are getting pretty close if they arent. Plus, even if there were enough, they would just trample the grass down and/ or eat it, so it wouldnt do much to save it.  the bison would also eat the food regularly there for the rancher's cattle and sheep. i oppose this idea.

Chapter 9:  Suppose because of disease or genetic defects from inbreeding, the wolves on Isle Royal (page 197) die off.  Should we (a) intervene and import new wolves to help control the moose population or, (b) let the moose population grow until it exceeds its carrying capacity and suffers another population crash?  Explain.

I think the best option would be to allow the moose population exceed carrying capacity, then naturally find a balance without the wolves. Importing new wolves could potentially lead to a cane toad incident. not as severe, surely, but still a potential problem. Also, the wolves died out because they could no longer be sustained on that island. This option will allow the moose to further adapt to being wolf free, thus progressing "survival of the fittest".

Chapter 10:  In the area that you live, are you more likely to experience an earthquake or a volcano eruption?  What can you do to escape or reduce the harm if such a disaster strikes?  What actions can you take when it occurs?

Here in Concord, NC, there really isnt much chance of earthquakes or volcanoes........other than some unnoticeable tremors from time to time. But they very very rarely get big enough to even barely feel....this being noted, there really arent many precautions to take being that they wont happen. if, somehow, concord was rocked by a massive earthquake, the best actions we could take would be run away, pretty much....

Chapter 18:  Do you agree/disagree with the argument by developing countries that developed countries should bear the brunt of reducing carbon dioxide emissions because they produce most of the emissions?  Explain.

I believe that, while developed countries do produce most of the carbon emissions, they should not be solely responsible fro the cleanup of them. Even if a developing country only produces 1/100000th of the carbon emissions, they still live on the same earth, so they should try to help cleanup as much as possible. the developed countries should do everything they can, but so should the developing countries. only when all are working in harmony will progress be made.

Chapter 16:  Congratulations!  You have just won $150,000 to build a house of your choice anywhere in the country.  What type of house would you build?  Where would you locate it?  What types of materials would you use?  What types of materials would you not use?  How would you heat and cool your house?  How would you heat your water?  Considering fuel and energy efficiency, what sort of lighting, stove, refrigerator, washer and dryer would you use?  Which of these appliances could you do without?

Yay! I won! Anyways.....lets see.....$150,000, eh? I'd build an enertia house up on a mountain, or in a big field. no, the mountain means less mowing. i'll take the mountain. Ok. So, for my mountain enertia cabin, i'd use wood to build it. I would definitely NOT use materials like cardboard boxes, paper mache, or buffalo hide to build my house. The enertia style is created in such a way that it naturally heats and cools itself, so that would be taken care of, and i wouldnt have a heating/ AC bill. I would use solar energy to heat my water, from the personal panels in the roof. The solar energy, since im on a mountain, will be abundant, so the lights, stove, fridge, washer, and dryer would also be run on the solar power. but most of the lighting will come from the direct sunlight, through skylights in the ceiling and huge windows in the sides. i could probably do without the lighting and just use candles in the dark. more than likely, this goes over my $150,000 winnings, but thats just what i've won, not all my money altogether. Since im the CEO of Google at this point (just...i dont know, why not?), the few extra expenses will not be a problem.
