Journal Prompts:

Chapter 1:  What does the word “sustainable society” mean to you?  Do you believe that it is possible for the society you live in to become a sustainable society within the next 50 years?

Sustainable yield is the highest rate at which a renewable resource can be used indefinetly without reducing its avalible supply. And no I don't think the society we live in wil became a sustainable society witin the next 50 yeas because the society we live in today, human use as much as they want without even thinking about replacing what they have just used.

Chapter 4:Why could the total amount of animal flesh on the earth never exceed the total amount of plant flesh, even if all animals are vegetarians?

Energy moves through an ecosystem in a series of transformations.First primary producers change the light energy of the sun into chemical energ. Then energy stored in plants is then transferred to other organisms in the form of food. After this is done primary consumers change it to a different kind of chemical energy and store it in their body cells. The energy changes again when the secondary consumer eats the primary consumer. Because so much energy escapes as heat at each step of the food chain, all ecosystems develop a pyramid of energy. The pyramid reflects the fact that more energy passes through the plants of the ecosystem than through the herbivores, and even less energy flows through the carnivores. Also, the pyramid of energy results in a pyramid of biomass. This simply means that the combined biomass (weight) of the plants is greater than the combined weight of the herbivores, which in turn exceeds the total weight of the carnivores.

Chapter 8:  Suppose a hurricane blows down most of the trees in a forest.  Timber company officials offer to salvage the fallen trees and plant a tree plantation to reduce the chances of fire and to improve the area’s appearance, with an agreement that they can harvest the trees when they reach maturity and plant another tree farm.  Others argue that the damaged forest should be left alone because hurricanes and other natural events are part of nature and the dead trees will serve as a source of nutrients for natural recovery through ecological succession.  What do you think should be done and why?

I think that we should plant a tree plantaion. because just because your palnting the other tree desnt mean that the dead ones cant still be nutrients. And also palnting the trees would increase the resoureces we use trees from.

Chapter 12:  Congratulations – you have just been put in charge of the world.  Explain the 5 most important features of your population policy.

1. population growth

2. Health

3. welfare

4. benifits

5. immigration

Chapter 13:  Some people argue that starving people could get enough food by eating non conventional plants and insects; other point out that most starving people do not know what plants and animals are safe to each and cannot take a chance on experimenting when even the slightest illness could kill them.  If you had no money to grow or buy food, would you collect and eat protein-rich grasshoppers, moths, or other insects?

yes I would eat the protein-rich instect. this is becasue i rather live then die.

Chapter 17:  Congratulation!  You are in charge of reducing air pollution in your country.  List the 3 most important features of your policy.

1. put restrictions on companies casusing air pollution

2. use things like bikes to minimize air pollution

3.  enforce consequence

Chapter 21:  Explain why you support or oppose requiring that:

  1. all beverage containers be reusable
  2. all household and businesses sort recyclable materials into separate containers for curbside pick-up
  3. garbage collecting systems implement the pay-as-you-trash approach
  4. consumers pay for plastic or paper bags to encourage the use of reusable shopping bags

a.       I support. Because it would cost less to make reusable containers

b.      I support. Because this cut down on energy used whether the sorting is done by machine or human.

c.       I oppose. Because people aren’t going to want to pay. So they are going to start dumping their trash elsewhere. And this increase things such as littering.

d.      I oppose.  Because people aren’t going to want to pay. And when they don’t pay what happens to all the bags that were made. It would be a waste of time and money.
