Chapter 1:  What does the word “sustainable society” mean to you?  Do you believe that it is possible for the society you live in to become a sustainable society within the next 50 years?

A sustainable society is one that "manages economy and population size without exceeding all pr part of the planets ability to absorb environmental insults, replenish resources, and sustain human and other forms of life over a period of time. " To me, that means that a sustainable society is one that continues to live and grow but does not end up harming the environment. In my opinion, I do not think that the society I live in will become a sustainable society in the next 50 years. Humans are selfish in nature and as we are becoming more materialist every day, I don't believe the society I live in cares enough about the environment to become a sustainable society. Unless something dramatically changes and the society I live in must become a sustainable society to survive,  I don't think we will ever become one.

Chapter 4:  Why could the total amount of animal flesh on the earth never exceed the total amount of plant flesh, even if all animals are vegetarians?

The total amount of animal flesh could not exceed the total amount of plant flesh becasue animals rely on the plant's release of oxygen to survive. The plants undergo photosynthesis which causes them to release oxygen which the animals need to breathe.

Chapter 8:  Suppose a hurricane blows down most of the trees in a forest.  Timber company officials offer to salvage the fallen trees and plant a tree plantation to reduce the chances of fire and to improve the area’s appearance, with an agreement that they can harvest the trees when they reach maturity and plant another tree farm.  Others argue that the damaged forest should be left alone because hurricanes and other natural events are part of nature and the dead trees will serve as a source of nutrients for natural recovery through ecological succession.  What do you think should be done and why?

I think that the damaged forest should be left alone so that the soil is able to replenish itself. If you try to plant new trees on the damaged soil they will have a harder time growing in the soil. Trees will grow as the Earth replenishs the ground that was damaged.

Chapter 9:  Suppose because of disease or genetic defects from inbreeding, the wolves on Isle Royal (page 197) die off.  Should we (a) intervene and import new wolves to help control the moose population or, (b) let the moose population grow until it exceeds its carrying capacity and suffers another population crash?  Explain.

You should let the moose population grow until it exceeds its carrying capacity and sufferes from another population crash. If you add new wolves to the area there may not be a preditor to control the new wolves. They island cannot carry that many moose so eventually there won't be enough food for all of the moose so some of the moose will begin to die off in result controlling the moose population. But if you add new wolves it may turn into a situation like the cane toads.

Chapter 10:  In the area that you live, are you more likely to experience an earthquake or a volcano eruption?  What can you do to escape or reduce the harm if such a disaster strikes?  What actions can you take when it occurs?

We are more likely to experience an earthquake in our area. In order to reduce the harm of an earthquake you must stock up on emergency supplies, stablalize heavy items such as computers and tvs, and make an evacuation plan. The first thing to do if an earthquake occurs is to drop to the floor and hold on. Then carefully check the area for unsafe places.

Chapter 18:  Do you agree/disagree with the argument by developing countries that developed countries should bear the brunt of reducing carbon dioxide emissions because they produce most of the emissions?  Explain.

I agree that developed countries should be trying to fix the carbon dioxide problems that they have already caused but developing countires should be working towards a way to prevent their emissions to become like those of developed countries. Developed countries should pay for their actions but developing countries should try to prevent further damage.

Chapter 15:  The United States now imports more than half the oil it uses and could be importing 64% of its oil by 2020.  Explain why you are for or against continuing to increase oil imports.  What do you believe are the 5 best ways to reduce oil imports?

I am against the importing of oil becasue we rely so much on it and we shouldn't be reling on other countries to that extent. In order to reduce oil imports, we should drill on our own soil, use althernative sources, lower our uses of oil, find cheaper alternatives, and develop ways to help oil go further.
