Journal One

Chapter 1:What does the word “sustainable society” mean to you?  Do you believe that it is possible for the society you live in to become a sustainable society within the next 50 years?

A sustainable society is one that will keep it resources for generations. I don't think that the society I live in can be a sustainable society within the next 50 years. Humans try to make new conservation laws, but the problem is that we have different views on how the environment should be handled. The 2 major parties keep bickering on what we should do, as the fighting keeps going on the environment will keep getting worse.

Journal Two:

Chapter 4:Why could the total amount of animal flesh on the earth never exceed the total amount of plant flesh, even if all animals are vegetarians?

Both species are part of the same carrying capacity. If the plants start to get abundant, then the animals will increase in numbers. As soon as the plants start to drop in numbers, so will the animals. It is like the lynx and rabbit lab, all the species are interrelated. Also we need the plant for our survival. They take out harmful CO2 and replace it with oxygen.

Chapter 8:  Suppose a hurricane blows down most of the trees in a forest.  Timber company officials offer to salvage the fallen trees and plant a tree plantation to reduce the chances of fire and to improve the area’s appearance, with an agreement that they can harvest the trees when they reach maturity and plant another tree farm.  Others argue that the damaged forest should be left alone because hurricanes and other natural events are part of nature and the dead trees will serve as a source of nutrients for natural recovery through ecological succession.  What do you think should be done and why?

I belive that they should be allowed in the forest to harcest the trees and then replant new ones. lanting new ones will recreate the anchor systems that the older trees had in the soil. This will prevent soil erosion. Also new trees in there first three years produce the most O2 in their lives, so we will be putting more O2 back in the air.

Journal Four

Chapter 12:  Congratulations – you have just been put in charge of the world.  Explain the 5 most important features of your population policy.

1). Population Control- limit 2 kids per houshold/couple

2). Then i woudl look at each region and then tweak rules and regulations for each region based on needs.

Journal Five

Chapter 10:  In the area that you live, are you more likely to experience an earthquake or a volcano eruption?  What can you do to escape or reduce the harm if such a disaster strikes?  What actions can you take when it occurs?

In our area we are more likely to experience an earthquake. You can't really run from a fault line, and the action that you take are to go to the lowest level in your house and put a matress on top of you( or is all this for a tornado). Either way it looks like a plan to me.

Journal Six

Chapter 17:  Congratulation!  You are in charge of reducing air pollution in your country.  List the 3 most important features of your policy.

     1). Wind Turbines

2). Solar Energy panals on the roofs of a certain size buildings

3). Cars have to have a certain MPG

Journal Seven

Chapter 16:  Congratulations!  You have just won $150,000 to build a house of your choice anywhere in the country.  What type of house would you build?  Where would you locate it?  What types of materials would you use?  What types of materials would you not use?  How would you heat and cool your house?  How would you heat your water?  Considering fuel and energy efficiency, what sort of lighting, stove, refrigerator, washer and dryer would you use?  Which of these appliances could you do without?

I could go with out a washer. I would build by a free flowing stream in the hilly country. My house would look like a little yellow house with a black door and black shutters. I would use normal house building materials. But for insulation i would use newspaper instead of the fiber glass s**t. Also i would use solar panels on the roof. CFLs lightbulbs and other treehugger stuff that makes me more green.
